The first thing seniors need to do is to get moving! Just like with young adults, physical therapy for seniors should include both aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Aerobic exercises are great because they help to improve cardiovascular health; however, it’s important that you don’t overdo it – if you try too hard or work out too much in the beginning of your treatment plan, this extra stress can potentially worsen symptoms (such as pain).
Anaerobic activities build muscle mass which helps prevent osteoporosis and other age-related conditions associated with loss of muscle mass. If you’re not sure what kind of anaerobic activity would be right for you there are plenty of things that older adults can do at home such as weightlifting using canned goods instead of weights.
It’s also important that seniors take a break from exercising every once in a while because this will give your body the chance to recover and heal itself, which is necessary for maintaining good health over time! The CDC recommends taking at least two days off per week; however, if you feel like it would be better for you, then go ahead and rest more than six days out of seven (just make sure not to do this too often though).
